Jesse started running her first year after law school, her first year in the “real” world. She found that while she’d been very active in college and law school, but once she started practicing law full time her schedule was a lot crazier. So one morning she put on the only pair of shoes she could find and tried to run a mile. She tried again a few days later, and in February 2011 she ran her first timed race, the Gasparilla 15k in Tampa, FL. She says “I ran it in an old pair of tennis shoes because I didn’t know any better”. That race took her straight to the ER because, she she “was pretty sure my leg has exploded on the inside”. The doctor laughed, confirmed there was no explosion, and diagnosed her with runner’s knee. Jesse bought her first good pair of running shoes the next week.
She ran the Rock and Roll Las Vegas Marathon 10 months later, her first full marathon. It was freezing (for those of you who have never seen it, this race starts at night, so you can run the Las Vegas strip in the dark), and Jesse said she cried “tears of absolute joy” when she finally saw the finish line. She’s also pretty sure she signed up for her second marathon the next day. To date she’s run 5 full marathons, countless half marathons and tons of shorter races. She even did a sprint triathlon because someone at a party bet her $5 she couldn't finish it. Even on the bad days, and oh-so-long- weekend runs in hot, humid, Florida weather, she says she’s head over heals in love with running.
When she’s not running Jesse practices law at the James Hoyer law firm in Tampa, FL. She focuses on qui tam litigation with an emphasis in education fraud. She also loves to travel. Right now she’s planning a trip to Denmark and Iceland and also spends lots of time visiting siblings in DC and Gainesville as well as her parent’s farm in Flat Rock, NC. She has a dog Max, and Max’s best friend is her cat, Gnocchi.
A huge thank you to Jesse, for being a part of the team, and for your efforts supporting Team TLT4C. We can’t wait to see you cross that finish line in October.
